A great name of the comedy has left us. Michel Aumont died in the night at the age of 82, his family said Thursday, August 29. Accustomed to the supporting roles of French cinema, Michel Aumont was above all a great theater man, honorary member of the Comédie-Française, having obtained four Molières.
The actor, who for 20 years played the role of Harpagon in "Molière's house", also played in films by Bertrand Tavernier (Spoiled children, 1977) and Claude Lelouch (Edith and Marcel , 1983) or more recently in Palais Royal (2005) by Valérie Lemercier. Michel Aumont had notably been named to the César for Bertrand Tavernier's A Sunday in the Country (1984) and Yves Robert's Courage fuyons (1979).
Since the 1970s, the comedian had worked with the biggest names in French cinema; Claude Chabrol, Claude Lelouch, Jean-Jacques Annaud, Francis Veber or Claude Zidi, most often playing the roles of politician or curator, as in Ripoux against Ripoux (1990), alongside Philippe Noiret and Thierry Lhermitte.
"The eye of the master"
Former Cannes Film Festival President Gilles Jacob has hailed a "great comedian, theater and cinema, classic and modern". "The sustain, the intonation, the phrasing, the accuracy, the discrete irony never very far and this kind of human thickness that serves the major roles. One of his titles suits him well: The eye of the master", has he reacted on Twitter.
This discreet, modest and humorous Parisian born October 15, 1936 had followed his mother comedienne from a very young age at the Festival d'Avignon. He was 18 at the National Conservatory of Dramatic Arts and two years later won a first prize in modern comedy.
