At the castle Thost had been seen between 1970 and 2001 in more than 70 roles.Thost, who was born on April 23, 1936 in Erfurt, Germany, initially took a different approach.After graduating from high school, he studied mechanical engineering for a few semesters before moving to the Stuttgart State University of Music and pursuing his vocation after completing his degree in 1963 at the local State Theater.
Soon followed with Nestroy's "Former Relationships" and the first own staging at the Stuttgart Theater of the Old Town and first musical appearances. Via Hamburg and Dusseldorf he finally came to Vienna, where he was engaged at the Burgtheater. There he played from the 1970/71 season numerous supporting roles u.a. in Brecht's "The Caucasian Chalk Circle", Wedekind's "Liebestrank", Schnitzler's "Das weite Land" or Grillparzer's "Woe to Him Who Lies!"

But he was also a guest on many stages far away from his parent company, such as the Theater der Jugend, the Raimundtheater, the Vienna Volksoper and the Theater in der Josefstadt. Thost also undertook excursions to music theater with performances at the Vienna Chamber Opera or the Theater an der Wien. Summer guest appearances in the festival area led him in the 1970s u.a. to the Karl May Festival in Bad Segeberg and the Salzburg Festival.
In addition to his theatrical career Thost was always a guest on the big screen and the television screen: In the 1970s, he turned around with Hans -Jürgen Syberberg ("Karl May"), Hans W. Geißendörfer ("The Wild Duck") and Volker Schlöndorff ( "The Fang Shot", "The Tin Drum".
He was also featured in US productions with Marvin J. Chomsky's "Holocaust - The White Family History" and Stephen Herek's "The Three Musketeers". He has been seen on television in numerous series, including the "Kaisermühlen Blues" or "Kommissar Rex". In 2001 he was awarded the Austrian Cross of Honor for Science and Art, in 2013 he was appointed professor. Thost was always present in the media through his social commitment.
