The seducer a middle-aged man problematic and introverted, wise old man. Always outspoken. On stage and off. And with his face and his characters he has attreversato the last sixty years of Italian cinema. At the age of 90 years died Gabriele Ferzetti, one of the most loved and admired performers even in the recent past of our theater. He was born in Rome on March 17, 1925. Among her most famous, The Provincial Mario Soldati, The Sisterhood of The Adventure by Michelangelo Antonioni, The Long Night of '43 Florestan Vancini, To Each His Own (1967) of Elio Petri. His latest film, I Am Love by Luca Guadagnino in 2009.
The beginnings. Born in Rome on March 17, 1925, excellent studies, the passion for theater that emerges immediately. He attended the Academy of Dramatic Arts Silvio d'Amico and now arrives in theaters. At 17, in 1942, alongside Dorsi Duranti in The Countess of Castiglione di Flavio Calzavara. After the war Luchino Visconti chose him in 1948 for As You Like It. His first leading role in the theater is the 1951 with Olga Villi in Daydream Rice; the first major statement on the screen has to Mario Soldati that puts it together with Gina Lollobrigida in The provincial of 1953, thanks to which will have the role of leading man in The Adventures of Giacomo Casanova directed by Steno and unfortunately for many years massacred by censorship.
The meeting with Antonioni. Two years later, on the screen, it has been struck that career change it. What with Michelangelo Antonioni among the Sisterhood The adventure turns into a symbol of masculinity hang in, counterpoint to the passion "macho" male at the time of the Italian economic revival. Gabriele Ferzetti is different: beautiful, elegant, understated, charming, however, is always a bit 'on the sidelines, not fill the screen as Gassman and Sordi, cut his roles working chisel and expressing the secret part of the contemporary man. I really understand all the masters of Italian cinema in the '60s. And the career of Ferzetti off.
The 60s. His attendance is obsessive sets (at the end will be more than 100 of his films), alternating with all the passion for theater and adventures abroad as in the beautiful Three Rooms in Manhattan of Marcel Carne (1965). Ductility interpreter sees it fully at ease in historical melodrama, unconventional comedies, adventure films and dramas of passion. There's also the appointment with the turmoil and scandal of '68, participating in Thanks aunt Salvatore Samperi, but Sergio Leone will give him glory in absolute drawing with him the memorable businessman suffering and cynical of Once Upon a Time in the West.
Abroad. In theater, especially thanks to the familiarity with Mario Missiroli, signing important pages reciting with great colleagues like Anna Lea Padovani or Proclemer. And this passion will accompany him until the deserved prize Ubu received for Dance of death in its full maturity. His forays into film and theater are so many and so varied (also participated in an adventure of 007, Her Majesty's Secret Service) that even today it is difficult to account for them. There was in him a desire to prove himself, a subtle pleasure to not like each other enough that drove him to overcome every time boundaries. Appearing in more than 100 films during his career he is most associated with director
The past few years. And there was also a secret shyness that was often mistaken for distance and arrogance that drove him to stay away from the limelight, from the paparazzi, the easy success. Still like to remember him in "Night Porter" Liliana Cavani (a monument to the sobriety of interpretation that remains its unmatched stretch), the "Quartetto Basileus" by Fabio Carpi, Othello Oliver Parker and, recently, I am Love by Luca Guadagnino. On that occasion, the international success of the film did find many unique class of that gentleman who made progress getting older.
