It is with a heavy heart that the International Trombone Association notes the passing of George M. Roberts, Mr. Bass Trombone. He died on September 28, 2014, in Fallbrook, CA at the age of 86 with complications from pneumonia and a long battle with Multiple Sclerosis. Roberts accomplished many great tasks for the trombone in his lifetime, including establishing the bass trombone's presence in the modern big band. He had a huge impact on the Hollywood recording industry in Los Angeles as a studio musician in movies such as Jaws and Close Encounters of the Third Kind. He appeared on nearly 6000 recordings before retiring. He was involved in the ITA for many years and is the namesake for the George Roberts Bass Trombone Competition.
