The screenwriter and director of Aquellos tiempos del cuplé, Frontera al sur y Comando al infierno has died in Madrid at 92 years of age.
Screenwriter and director with more than 30 films behind him, José Luis Merino Boves (Madrid, 1927) received the Jimeno Award for the direction Aquellos tiempos del cuplé (1958), debut with Mateo Cano with whom he would direct El vagabundo y la estrella, starring the Canarian tenor Alfredo Kraus.
Independently he was at the forefront of Italian productions such as Frontera al sur, La batalla del último Panzer, La última aventura del Zorro o Robin Hood, el arquero invencible; y de las españolas Comando al infierno, La muerte busca un hombre, El zorro de Monterrey, La rebelión de los bucaneros, 7 cabalgan hacia la muerte y Gritos de ansiedad, among others.
His last film, which he was also a scriptwriter, was Superagentes in Mallorca, which he signed with Antonio Cornejo in 1990 and had the sisters Marta and Loreto Valverde in the cast. Previously he wrote and directed Gritos de ansiedad interpreted by Lola Forner, Jesús Puente and Charo Soriano, among others.
In the 1950s José Luis Merino began his career in cinema as an assistant director for Antonio del Amo, Pedro Lazaga, Francisco Rovira-Beleta and César Fernández Ardavín.
The Madrilenian filmmaker also made his first steps as an actor in small roles in several films by José Luis Garci.
